Exploring Hidden Gems: Travel Like a Local

Almost everybody loves to travel. We make plans, save, and anticipate going to new destinations. However, sometimes having been to a popular destination, it feels there is something missing. You have seen the iconic spots, taken photos and proceed, yet the experience does not always seem real. It is hectic, crowded and somehow out of touch.

The reason is that majority of the travelers are more like tourists than living in the location like locals.

I used to have the same pattern when I was first beginning to travel. I would go to the Internet and find the best places to visit, create a list, and visit as many as possible in a short period. It was productive and at the same time, it was not meaningful. Long queues, too many people and very little space to enjoy the moment was evident everywhere I went.

With time I understood that most enjoyable traveling experiences are not necessarily in our tourist destinations. They are often hidden in small corners, quiet streets, and simple moments.. That is when I began seeking out the hidden gems and, frankly speaking, it altered my traveling pattern.

Hidden gems are those places that are not so well known but full of charm and authenticity. These may include small cafes owned by neighbourhood families, small streets with great architecture or even local food joints that offer superb cuisines without hype. These destinations might not be found on the list of all travel guides, but they can create the most impressive impression.

These places are not as difficult to find as it sounds. It just requires a different mindset. You begin to be curious and not always follow the maps and lists. It can be helpful to talk to locals as they are aware of the actual side of the city. There are also chances of making the unexpected discoveries by going out without any particular strategy. You may even go to the same places at other times of the day you change your experience altogether.

The other best thing about the hidden gems is that they tend to be cheaper. Tourist places are typically costly since they are set up to accommodate tourists, whereas local places target ordinary citizens. You receive better prices, original food and a more relaxed atmosphere. It is not more of a transaction but rather an experience.

There is no difference when traveling as a local. You begin to see the little things that you would not bother to see. People speak in a more meaningful way, the beat of their everyday life, the beauty of the things they see around, become all the more real. You do not come to visit a place anymore, you experience it.

I recall that there was a time when I missed going to a trendy restaurant and chose to take a stroll in a street I randomly picked. A small food stall, with no large sign, and very few people. I went ahead to taste it and that meal was one of the best I have ever tasted. It was not fancy but real and I still remembered that moment better than any well-known site that I have been to.

It is not only about visiting and marking off the places in a list. It is about making memories that you will remember. Memories that are unplanned, simple and unexpected are often the best.

The next time when you travel, do it differently. Bypass one of the overcrowded attractions, make a last minute turn, or initiate a conversation with a local. You may find something unique, something that is not found on the maps but remains long in your memory.

Don’t just travel to see places. Travel to feel them.

👉 Travel Monkey Tip: Don’t follow the crowd. Follow your curiosity..
